Merlin Returns to the Screens

It's magic. October comes and a new series of Merlin appears on screen. The success of a well known story broken into bite size bits and staffed with over-pretty actors and actresses breeds sequel after sequel. The magic of it is that just about everyone has some idea how the general story runs. Missed an episode? Not that important; you'll still be able to follow what is going on based on what you know.

It is more difficult if you have read loads of Arthurian literature and spin-offs. Watching then becomes more of a guessing game where the author of the series got the ideas from. It's very distracting when your brain constantly tries to put authors names to bits and pieces being shown in the episode. Not too distracting, though, to still enjoy the gorgeous hunks BBC has assembled for boys and girls to enjoy.

Like Harry Potter, the series is growing up as it goes on. Initially intended for a teen audience, the makers noticed that grown ups can get hooked on it just as much. Consequentially, the fifth series has become more grown up than any before and is darker and more ominous than the previous four. It has more special effects, too.

The main thing for viewers is the stability of the cast. Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as (the Prince has become) King Arthur, Eoin Macken as Sir Gawaine, Tom Hopper as Sir Percival, and Rupert Young as Sir Leon remain on the casting list to be ogled at will. We can expect a lot of hunky goodness to come.
